Casey Kasem’s Unintended Legacy:

Casey Kasem’s Unintended Legacy: A Reminder of the Scourge of Elder Abuse

Perhaps now is the time to honor Kasem with activism on the issue of elder abuse. Miriam Becker-Cohen, a researcher at the Urban Institute, raises the issue of whether Kasem’s death at the age of 82, attributed to sepsis from an ulcerated bedsore, might have been related to elder abuse. Becker-Cohen acknowledges that there is no definitive evidence. However, Kasem, who suffered from dementia, was caught in a battle between his second wife and the children of his first wife regarding who would care for him and how as his health failed.
The press coverage of Kasem’s last days focused on the salacious family drama, but may have been instructive about the more important issue of elder abuse. Several nonprofits offer a variety of programs and services addressing the needs of the elderly, notably the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) among others. Often the public debate around senior issues focuses on Social Security and Medicare, but the topic of elder abuse isn’t often on the agenda.

June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

The World Health Organization describes elder abuse as a global social issue affecting the health and human rights of millions of people. It estimates up to six-percent of the elderly are abused at home, with many cases going unreported.

The U.N. predicts the number of people 60 years old and above will reach about 1.2-billion by 2025. That’s more than double the figure recorded in 1995. And as the global population ages, the U.N. said elder abuse is expected to rise.

“Elder abuse is a universal problem encountered in many countries – with little recourse at [the] national level where [the] government in some cases may not have specific policies to encounter and remedy where such abuse is taking place.”

He said there’s a wide range of abuse against the elderly.

“Physical, emotional, sexual, psychological abuses -- and in some cases discrimination and denial of rights for older persons -- thereby taking them as sub-persons in their own nations,” he said.

And the abuse can be violent.

More Than 6,000 Cases Of Elder Abuse

There Were More Than 6,000 Cases Of Elder Abuse
In Wisconsin Last Year
Thursday, June 12, 2014, 6:47pm
By Shamane Mills

Last year there were more than 6,200 cases of suspected elder abuse reported in Wisconsin, and with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day coming up on Sunday, officials are trying to get the word out to prevent more cases from occurring.

“Elder abuse” has a specific meaning under Wisconsin law. The term applies to anyone over age 60 and refers to a wide array of offenses: treatment without consent, physical and mental abuse, or financial exploitation.

“Statistics show that (the) elderly in our community who are abused financially are the most reluctant to come forward, because often times it involves family members,” said Mahoney.

Lak decision; Attorney Roasted

Introduction1

In this original disciplinary proceeding, the Office of the Chief Trial Counsel of the State of Bar of California (State Bar) charged Daniel Kristof Lak (respondent) with a total of eight counts of misconduct in three matters. The charges include failing to perform legal services with competence, failing to inform a client of significant developments, moral turpitude –  misrepresentation to a client, failing to render accounts of client funds, practicing law while suspended, misusing a client trust account, failing to maintain respect for the court, and seeking to mislead a judge. The court finds respondent culpable on all counts and after considering the facts and the law recommends, among other things, that respondent be suspended from the practice of law for a period of two years and until he provides proof to the State Bar Court of his rehabilitation, fitness to practice, and learning and ability in the general law.

Elder abuse on the rise, often at the hands of those closest - Really? Bring down hammer!

"law enforcement and prosecutors are seeing an increase in the number of incidents of exploitation and abuse against older people.
“People tend to think, ‘It’s never going to happen to me or to my loved one,’” said Rae Vermeal with Arizona Department of Economic Security’s Adult Protective Services.
But just in the past decade, reports of elder exploitation in Arizona are up nearly 50 percent, the agency says."

89-year-old WWII veteran reported missing from nursing home

By , and Oliver Duggan
On a day of sombre reflection and deep felt gratitude for the bravery of the men who stormed the Normandy beaches, one D-Day veteran in particular seemed to embody all their pluck, determination and even humour with his actions 70 years later.
Bernard Jordan, who served with the Royal Navy during Operation Overlord, had been looking forward to joining the events in northern France to pay tribute in person to his comrades who fell during the invasion.
But on being told by staff at the residential care home in Hove that they had not been able to get him onto an organised coach trip for the anniversary events, he took matters into his own hands.
Pinning on his D-Day campaign medals under his raincoat Mr Jordan, 89, set off under his own steam and headed for Normandy.

Abuser dons disquise, update on Robert Stella

Elder Abuse Suspect Dons Disguise to Get Close to Victim

Caught on camera: Estranged wife of elderly La Jolla resident was armed with a pen and legal docs, family said

A La Jolla woman, in disguise and armed with a pen and legal documents, tried to visit the elderly man she’s accused of abusing, family members told NBC 7.

Robert Stella and family members recently filed a restraining order request against Victoria Turner after a surprise visit at the care facility where Stella is undergoing treatment.

Stella, who just turned 91, was rescued from the garbage and filth in his own home last March. Family members claim his estranged wife, Turner, kept the home cluttered and filthy and – at times – tied Stella to his bed.

When Stella was removed from the home malnourished and dehydrated, he was hospitalized in ICU for days.

He is now recovering at a rehab facility where, according to daughter Michelle Redfield, Turner used a disguise and fictitious purpose to get close to him.

NBC7 Investigates obtained a copy of the security video and the restraining order affidavits connected to the April 5 visit.

Killing, Excrement, two news stories about elder abuse

The murder of 65-year-old Kathleen Wilkinson, who was choked to death allegedly at the hands of her husband, is the second Saratoga County homicide in less than a year that was tied to elder abuse. The first was a murder-suicide on Saratoga Lake.

A Conyers man was charged with elder abuse after his elderly parents were found living in their own excrement, with open sores on their body, surrounded by rotting food.

On Friday, around 6 p.m., Rockdale County Sheriff's Office deputies, as well as a crisis team supported by the state Department of Behavioral Health and Disabilities, were called out to 2618 Union Church Road, the home of a 78-year-old woman and her 71-year-old husband.
