ALICE THURNAU never left the hospital after suffering brain bleeding and a broken arm, hip, ribs, eye socket and sinus bone when she was knocked to the sidewalk in front of her Port Richmond home while being robbed of her purse.

Esther Ayodele had no signs of life when paramedics found her at her son's Germantown home. The medical examiner found 273 bruises, and wounds on every part of her 5-foot-2, 98-pound body.

Iris Galarza looked like a homeless drifter as she walked the streets of Kensington with plastic bags on her feet and reeking of urine. She had a home, but a woman she trusted was stealing her Social Security checks, resulting in Galarza's living in squalor and having to beg a store owner for food, authorities said.

These three women had one thing in common: old age. Thurnau was 90. Ayodele was 82. Galarza, who is deaf and has dementia, is 89.

In Philadelphia and across the nation, elder abuse - physical, financial, sexual or by neglect - is a growing problem, yet it dwells in the shadows of the better-publicized crimes of child abuse and domestic abuse, advocates say.

"Elder abuse here and everywhere is a hidden problem, and it's only going to get bigger, given the demographics of the baby boomers," said Joseph Snyder, of the Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA), a nonprofit agency that investigates abuse allegations and works to keep the elderly in their homes.

Its director, Deborah Cooper Nixon, tapped by D.A. Seth Williams in December, has been with the office for 21 years, most recently as a homicide prosecutor.

"I think the time is now for elder abuse. I think that people are really looking at this epidemic and asking, 'Why?' They're asking, 'How can we roll up our sleeves and help?' " said Nixon, 48, holding up a thick stack of papers containing the names of hundreds of abuse victims age 60 and older with active cases in the D.A.'s office.

"I personally feel that elder abuse is heinous, and it's something that we as a society have to do more to stop," Nixon added.

Honorable Sheriff Baca,

I am writing to you in hopes that someone will explain to the family of Mr. and Mrs. Thelsey L. Fuller as to why the L. A. County Sherriff’s Department refuses to investigate a blatant case of elder abuse, financial elder abuse.

I initially contacted the Sheriff’s Department [Compton] on 08 August 2009, in regards to the condition and location of Mr. Thelsey L. Fuller, my 92-year-old maternal grandfather.  I spoke with Deputy Anderson at approximately 9:20 PM (EST), Incident #170, File #14014.

I spoke with a detective [LAPD] last week for well over an hour. Any criminal investigation would have to be done by the L. A. Sheriff's Department as Daddy was living in Compton at the time of these crimes.

Please find a portion of the documents, which I believe support the elder abuse, financial elder abuse of Mr. Thelsey L. Fuller and Mrs. Edwina J. Fuller.  Keep in mind that his abusers had the motive, opportunity and the means necessary to carry out their various crimes.

THE DETOUR

Dear Friends,

This was another successful week for the campaign.  I was interviewed for the Los Angeles Sentinel, a local Iranian radio station, an Armenian television station and KCRW radio.  I secured the endorsements of U.S. Congresswoman Maxine Waters and Bert and Jane Boeckmann, owners of Galpin Ford and respected community leaders.  I participated in a news conference with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and several council members.  I was the keynote speaker at the Urban Issues Breakfast Forum and attended a celebration of 50 years of service by the Gooden Center in Pasadena, which treats men who are addicted to alcohol and drugs.  We also had eight very successful fundraising events this week.

While running through this fast-paced schedule, I took a detour.  It ultimately led me to rediscover why I became a prosecutor - to help people.  I made a late scheduled stop at the Senior Center in Pan Pacific Park.  I arrived in the afternoon while the staff was serving coffee and muffins to about 50 senior citizens.  I slowed down enough to watch as some of our most precious residents interacted with each other.  I love seniors and instinctively want to shield them from harm.  They worked so hard and deserve to be protected from unscrupulous scam artist trying to swindle them out of their savings.  Instead of my campaign stump speech, I took another detour.  I shared the story of my 75-year old mother who received a call from a “police officer” telling her to wire money overseas to bail her grandson out of jail.  The caller told her not to tell anyone.  The problem was her grandson wasn’t in jail and the caller wasn’t a police officer ��� but a crook.  One senior in the audience replied, “Hey, that’s what happened to me!”  I told them that as their next District Attorney, I would prosecute cases involving financial fraud and other abuse against elders. When I finished my remarks, the room erupted in applause and I felt like I had made a difference.  It is this feeling that reminds me why I have devoted my entire professional life to being a prosecutor.  The seniors thanked me and sent me on my way with two pumpkin-spiced muffins, a cup of coffee and a promise to vote for me for District Attorney.
